THE SELECTER & THE BEAT FEAT. RANKING ROGER ADD A SUMMER CASTLE DATE IN WALES!
Two of Britain’s finest 2-Tone exports, The Selecter and The Beat feat. Ranking Roger will unite for an extra date in 2018 at Caerphilly Castle on Friday 13th July with Sonic Boom Six also confirmed as special guests for this show. The concert will be held in one of the most stunning venues in the world. Tickets go on general sale from Friday 2nd February at 10am through Ticketmaster.co.uk and in person from Blackwood Miners’ Institute or by calling Ticketmaster Box Office on 0844 844 0444.
This show follows recent announcements of The Bootleg Beatles and The Levellers also confirmed to perform at Wales’ largest Castle on the 14th and 15th of June respectively.
The Selecter and The Beat feat. Ranking Roger are two of the main bands to come out of 2 Tone – a crucial musical and cultural movement which is still as relevant today as it was over 30 years ago. Renowned for their energetic live shows, longevity has not diminished either band’s ability to put in a performance and get everyone in a room, or in this case a castle, dancing.
Lifelong friends, the two bands teamed up last year, giving fans a rare treat, hitting the road together across Europe for a number of co-headline shows, including a sold out show at Tramshed, Cardiff. Originally announced as a six-date tour, they played nearly forty dates together in 2017 due to phenomenal demand. This included sold out shows at London’s iconic Roundhouse and Amsterdam’s Melkweg.
The hugely successful pairing is now continuing into 2018 and going global, with more dates added in the UK and worldwide to countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Ireland, Germany and France.
The Beat feat. Ranking Roger released their spectacular fourth album Bounce in September 2016. This was their first in over thirty years, and the album shows off every gleaming aspect of one of the most musically diverse bands to come out of the multiracial, multicultural explosion that remade British pop from 1979 onwards. Joining Roger in the revitalised band is his son, Ranking Junior AKA Matthew Murphy, a powerhouse MC who brings a new vibe on the toasting that made Ranking Roger such a pivotal part of the original Beat. The same energy that drove the hit singles of the 80s, Mirror In The Bathroom, Hand’s Off She’s Mine, Save It For Later and Too Nice To Talk To – is here again on the album.
The Selecter is led by their iconic frontwoman Pauline Black, co-fronted by original member Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson alongside an incredibly talented band of musicians. The anarchic passion that fuelled Selecter gigs during the 2 Tone era is still there, except the pair (Pauline & Gaps) are more driven than ever. Their confidence is sky-high and they’re also writing the best songs of their career. The popularity of previous hits like Three Minute Hero, Missing Words, Too Much Pressure and On My Radio is still strong, but they hope their new material will be just as welcomed by fans. They released new studio album Daylight in October 2017 – which Mojo called “their most energised since their 1979 debut.”
Opening the Caerphilly Castle event are Manchester’s very own Sonic Boom Six, a six piece ska-rock band influenced by The Specials, The Clash and The Fugees. The band have released five albums, toured across the world and have performed at festivals including Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, Boomtown, Reading and Leeds, plus the whole of the Vans Warped Tour 2017 in the USA.
